02. Background

Spanish players must set limits before they start playing slot games

Spanish regulations

Regulatory requirements states that spanish online casino players must set a slot game session limit every time they login and start a game. The limits are how long they wish to play, how much they are willing to spend and how often they want to be reminded of their gaming statistics during the ongoing session.

How it works

Once a player has set their limits then a session is started. The player can then play until either their time limit or spending limit is reached. A player can not change any limit while a session is active.

Problem to solve

Although this is a regulatory requirement for player protection, setting slot game limits everytime you start a slot game after login can become cumbersome if not designed properly. The challenge we faced was how can we make the limit setting fast and still keep it clear for players.

03. The Solution

Set limits with minimal manual input

Brainstorming & Sketching

During a brainstorm session together with product manager we went through the requirements as well as analysing how competitors have solved this. Requirements states that limits can be pre-defined as long as we offer a wide range of alternatives. So we started doing some exploration work by looking at competitors, going through UI patters and sketching. We created two initial UI flows that we wanted to continue exploring. One which were a player goes through a three page wizard and the other one page wizard through collapsible panels.

Prototyping & Guerrilla User Testing

After our brainstorming and sketching session, I created two interactive prototypes based on the two UI flow concepts that we created. The UI design was done in Sketch and then migrated to Invision studio for interactivity and transitions. Guerrilla user testing was then conducted on the UI flows with colleagues who were not part of this project. The two different flows can be seen in the videos below.

04. Final results

Our guerrilla user testing helped us deciding on which concept to proceed with. The concept with a three page wizard was perceived as a bit confusing as the test participants felt that they lost track of which limits they had previously set. The collapsible panel wizard was perceived as more clear and easier to follow the flow with the limits you are about to set. So with the feedback we recieved during our guerrilla user testing we iterated and refined the design before implementation.

05. Outcomes

A safe gambling environment for spanish players

Your gambling, your limits

With the release of slot session limits, spanish players have now a gambling environment where they set their own limits of how long they intend to play, how much they can afford to spend and how often they want to be reminded of their gambling activities.

Quick and easy limit setting

Although this feature is to promote a safe gambling environment, having to set your slot session limits everytime you login to play can become a cumbersome and repetitive. This solution allow players to set their limits quick and easy with only three clicks.
